| $@%&! level: Low “Bedroom” level: Low Violence level: Medium Back Cover: “There are mages out there. And some of them are kind of cute. Like Tannim, for instance, a young human mage with a predilection for hot rock, fast cars and dangerous women. Now he thinks he's found Ms. Right, but there are three tiny little problems: 1) Her father is a dragon. 2) She's not human though she is definitely a fox. 3) She seems to want to kill him.... Tannim's magery is sometimes erratic—but his talent for getting himself into trouble is perfect.” |
In terms of plot, there's an awful lot of chasing going on, one way or another. First it's chase and set traps, with Tannim lured Underhill by the girl of his dreams (literally, the girl of his dreams) and captured by the bad guys. Then it's the bad guys chasing Tannim and his new girlfriend (who certainly does seem to send a lot of mixed signals), while their friends try to rescue them. That means you get a lovely tour of some of the nastier and more bizarre parts of Underhill. And of course the final confrontation happens when all three groups just happen to manage to catch up with each other at exactly the same time. It doesn't seem very likely, does it? And Tannim's sacrifice at the end turns out to be pretty pointless all around, which he really should have seen coming. And I don't really care about either objection, because I just loved reading it anyway. Mercedes Lackey is especially good at that kind of scene.
