Dragonsong, the first volume in the series, is the enchanting tale of how Menolly of Half Circle Hold became Pern's first female Harper, and rediscovered the legendary fire lizards who helped to save her world.” |
And what excellent adventures she does have! Think My Side of the Mountain, but with miniature dragons. After that, it's really just a rehash of things that happened in other novels of the Pern variety, seen from a different perspective, but Anne McCaffrey manages to turn it into the quintessential fairytale story. Menolly is mistreated and misunderstood at home, so she runs away, ends up in several unexpected places, has grand experiences, and ends up meeting the man of her dreams (sort of) who whisks her off to a new life such as she's dreamed of and that she's perfectly suited for. And with miniature dragons, don't forget.
Maybe you can tell that, much as I enjoy the story and quite like Menolly as a character, I think the fire lizards are actually the most engaging characters. It's her interaction with them that makes it good.
