| $@%&! level: None “Bedroom” level: None Violence level: Medium-Low (mostly magical and reversible) Back Cover: “For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary is one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite... Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother must face the greatest challenge of their lives to save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world.” |
There were really only two problems I had, but they were sort of extensive problems. The first one was that Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson (who run Fablehaven) both had a tendency to speak—well, they actually speak a lot like I write. It's fine in print, but if you imagine someone talking that way, it sounds kind of stilted and over-formal. The second problems is with Seth. That child never learns! You'd think after being turned into a mutant walrus, he'd begin to exercise a little discretion—but you'd be wrong. Any time he's told not to do something (or even if he knows it's something an adult would disapprove of) that's exactly what he goes and does. Just like clockwork. It's like he's convinced that everything is just a game, and that all adults are idiots who's main goal in life is to keep him from having any fun. While I can believe a kid would go into Fablehaven with that mindset, it strains my credulity that he keeps it as long as he does.
